Abstract Highly sensitive D-shaped plasmonic photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor is proposed, analyzed and fabricated for refractive index (RI) sensing. The reported relies on the coupling between core guided mode surface plasmon at metallic/dielectric interface. resonance frequency a function of analyte RI within range 1.33–1.354. Therefore, PCF holds great potential as highly to detect an unknown tested range. geometrical parameters are studied maximize sensitivity by using full vectorial finite element method. Then, optimum design stack draw technique. achieves high 294.11 nm/RIU with resolution $$3.4 \times 10^{ - 4} \;{\text{RIU}}$$ 3.4 × 10 - 4 RIU . can be used glucose concentration detection where changes Hence, this will play significant role in biomedical industry.
